Palpable fear has in recent times gripped the inhabitants of Michika Local Government Area in Adamawa over spate of horrific attacks by the citizens of the LGA who returned from Lagos State after a ban on the use of motorcycle by the Lagos State Government.
At the moment, the activities of the cultists pose a great threat to the residents of Michika, and may likely affect the peaceful coexistence of the people in the area.
The suspected cultists who are mostly the youth, have been identified to be the ones that returned from Lagos early this year following the ban placed on the use of motorcycle by Lagos Government.
It could be recalled that the Lagos State Government had early this year announced the ban of tricycles (AKA "Keke NAPEP" or "Marwa") and motorbikes (AKA Okada) operators, the development rendered hundreds of the operators who are mostly from Adamawa and Michika LGA in particular jobless.
NEWS PLATFORM who was in Michika learnt that the cult members use secret signs, oats, rites or symbols and initiating most especially youth into the secret cult; hence increasing their nefarious activities on harpless citizens.
Cross section of the residents of the LGA who spoke to NEWS PLATFORM lamented that most of their youth who spend several years in Lagos came back home and became nuisance and causing all sorts of trouble.
According to them, parents and other family members are now being harassed, intimidated by the boys, and appealed to security agencies to take adequate measures towards curtailing such threats.
Some noted with concern how the returnees threaten to kill their parents in an event they ask for material things that their parents could not afford to provide, saying that cultism in the LGA is becoming a fertile ground for proliferation of all the other social vices in the community.
Most of the terrible attitudes being exhibited by the youth, according to them, are probably due to their desire to explore alternative avenues for survival in a society that does not cater for their needs, as well as venting their anger, frustrations over joblessness.
Speaking in an interview with the Executive Chairman of the LGC, Michael Shehu shortly after his meeting with the State House of Assembly Standing Committee on Security led by Hon. Ibrahim Musa Italiya (Mayo Belwa) at the LGC Secretariat Monday, described the activities of the affected youth as unfortunate.
Hon. Shehu noted that cultism amongst their youth who returned from Lagos is worrisome, and called for concerted efforts towards addressing the ugly situation before getting out of hand.
