ADHA CMTE ON AGRIC VISITS MDAs, SEEKS EARLY, TIMELY DISTRIBUTION OF FERTILIZER


Standing Committee on Agriculture of the Adamawa State House of Assembly has embarked on a familiarisation visit on Ministry, Departments and Agencies under it with a call on the state government to do everything possible towards making fertilizer available to farmers for new cropping season.

The Committee however sought for early and timely distribution of fertilizer to farmers across the state, so as to boost food production in the state, saying the major concern of the Committee is to make Adamawa a food basket of Nigeria.

The Chairman of the Committee and Member representing Song Constituency, Hon. Simon Isa made the call while leading the Vice Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Shuaibu Babas(Fufore Gurin) and members of the Committee including, the Majority Leader, Hon. Hammantukur Yetisuri(Jada Mbulo), Hon. Adwawa Donglock(Guyuk), Hon. Abdullahi Ahmadu(Leko Koma), Hon. Wesley Bathiya(Hong), Hon. Shuaibu Dan Musa(Mubi North), Hon. Alhassan Hammanjoda(Ganye) and Hon. Umar Musa Bororo(Mubi South) on the visit.

Speaking while leading the Committee at the Ministry of Agriculture, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Simon Isa said that his Committee decided to visit its MDAs, so as to familiarise itself with its activities and challenges confronting it.

Hon. Simon said that their visit will enable them know the plans put in place by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri led administration for agricultural sector, saying that the Committee is ready to synergise with the Ministry to see how best to address some of the ministry's challenges.

While at the Adamawa Agricultural and Investment Limited (AADIL), the lawmaker disclosed that his Committee is the most strongest one apart from the Committee of whole, stating that he led the Honourable Members so as to know its plans on how to develop sector.

He explained that the primary concern of his Committee is how best to assist in reviving agricultural activities considering the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on the economy.

Responding, the Commissioner Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Khode Dishi, gave kudos to the Ministry for its wise reasoning towards constituting the Committee that will oversea the Ministry, saying that the cordial relationship being enjoyed in the state between the executive and the legislative arms is applauded.

Dr. Dishi said that there are areas that the forces of the Ministry will not carry them, but with the combine forces, it will take them to the greater height, stating that the Ministry has plans on ground on how to soften the hardness of the farmers.

He asserted that there are some imputs given to the Ministry by the North East Development Commission and that in no distance time, the inputs will be distributed to farmers, adding that the Ministry had forwarded its memo for approval in order to procure fertilizer.

On his part, the Acting Managing Director AADIL, Ibrahim Goni Dasin, told the Committee that his agency was established as an institution in January, 2020, as a limited liability company owned by the state government, pointing out that the agency is saddled with the mandate to manage commercial activities on behalf of the state government.

The MD noted that it is part of their mandate to train farmers on how best to use modern farming technology, and that the agency has a plan on  how to provide inputs to farmers at the right time.

While at Adamawa State Agricultural Development Programme (AADP), the Programme Manager, Dauda Ibrahim Mbulo told them that about 80 out 130 Extension Staff have retired in 2020.

Ibrahim Mbulo informed them that on Monday alone he signed the retirement letters of 15 Extension Staff, saying most of them were employed between 1984 and 1985, and known their job very well, and that it has posed a serious challenge on the organisation.
