ADAMAWA ASSEMBLY TO ASSESS THE PERFORMANCE OF LG C'TTEES IN 100 DAYS




As parts of commitment towards ensuring accountability and transparency in the act of governance, the Lawmakers in the Adamawa State House of Assembly have resolved to undertake assessment tour across all the 21 Local Government Councils.

The assessment tour will enable the legislators to acquaint themselves with the performance of the Local Government Transition Committees within the last 100 day.

To this end, the House of Assembly said it is going to announce the composition of the adhoc committee that will undertake the assessment tour at the plenary session tomorrow Wenesday 9th October, 2019.

The resolutions of the Honourable Members followed a matter of urgent public importance brought before the house by the Chairman House Standing Committee on Local Government Affairs and member representing Nassarawo Binyeri constituency, Hon. Umar Nashion Gubi, at a resumed plenary session today.

Earlier, Hon. Umar Nashion, reminded his colleagues on the need to go round all the 21 LGCs so as to assess the performance of the LGTCs, saying that the committee chairmen have clocked 100 days in office, and the need to see for themselves what they have been able to achieved.

Speaking on the motion, the member representing Demsa constituency, Hon. Kate Mamuno, said that part of their responsibilities as legislators is to ensure checks and balances in the operation of the LGCs, explaining that the tour will help them have a thorough knowledge on the performance of the committees.

Hon. Kate Mamuno, prayed the house to take it as a point of duty to visit the LGCs in the interest of their people at the grassroots, and at the same time ensure accountability and transparency at the LGCs.

Also speaking, the member representing Song Constituency, Hon. Simon Isa, advised the house to mandate the committee to visit both the completed and ongoing projects embarked upon by the Transition Committees.

Hon. Simon, said that the adhoc committee members should ensure that they meet with councillors and supervisory councillors to brief them because according to him some of the LG Committee Chairmen have not been carrying them along in the scheme of things.

On his part, the member representing Verre Constituency, Hon. Abdullahi Umar Yapak, and his counterpart of Ganye constituency, Hon. Alhassan Hammajoda, commended the present administration for giving financial autonomy to the LGCs, and said that there is transparency in the way the finances of the LGCs are being handled in the state.

After contributions from the legislators, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas, who presided over the sitting, said that the committee will be constituted during tomorrow's plenary session.

Rt. Hon. Iya Abbas, added that the Committee will ensure that all the entitlements LG workers are being taken care of, ensure all the expenditures are in line with the guidelines approved by the house, value for projects and look at liabilities with a view to ensuring that they were actually incurred by the past government.
