TOWNHALL MEETING: DEMSA COMMUNITIES SEEK GOVT INTERVENTION THROUGH MEMBER
Cross section of Communities in Demsa Local Government Area, Adamawa State have presented their demands to the member representing their constituency, Hon. Kate Raymond Mamuno, for upward presentation to the State Government for intervention.
Among the demands presented by the representatives of the communities across 10 wards of the LGA include; unemployment, insecurity, lack of portable water supply, poor health facilities, bad road networks among others.
The representatives were drawn from Dilli, Demsa, Gwamba, Borong, Bille, Kpasham, Mbula, Dong, Dwam and Nassarawo Demsa Wards and represented tens of thousands of voters' across the LGA.
The town hall meeting which was the first of its kind in the constituency, was organised by the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and supported by the member of the parliament.
It equally saw the presentation of needs assessment by the Center for Public Education and Mobilisation for Development where it used scientific principles or method to determine priorities of the citizens in all the various wards.
According to the conveners of the event, the primary reason behind organising the town hall meeting, was to enable the member and her electorates to deliberate on issues affecting them, and how best to address them for the betterment of the entire people.
Speaking at the occasion, the convener of the town hall meeting and member representing Demsa constituency, Hon. Kate Raymond Mamuno, said that the NDI and herself decided to organise the meeting so as to interface with her constituents most especially on the challenges they have been encountering.
Hon. Mamuno added that they decided to convene the meeting so as to interact with her people with a view to moving the constituency forward, saying that the meeting created an avenue where she met with her electorates.
The female legislator posited that by organising such meetings, it will enable them understand themselves better for better representation, promising to do everything possible to meet up with the needs assessment presented by her constituents.
She told the gathering that her constitutional responsibility at the hallowed chamber is to enact laws, resolutions and carry out oversight function and not to execute capital projects, reiterating her commitment to providing them with quality representation through lobbying and sponsoring of matters that affect them.
Also speaking, the representative of NDI, Abayomi Akinseye, contended that the major role of the lawmaker is to stand in the gap, adding that her role is different from that of executive arm, and that her duty is to ensure adequate representation at the house.
Abayomi Akinseye, noted that the member's role is not to construct bridges, road networks, and give employment but to lobby in order to attract the attention of the executive arm on some problems facing her people.
In his remarks, the representative of the Center for Public Education and Mobilisation for Development, Machain Maxwell, said that his organisation's role at the event is to provide information that will help the member and her constituents to understand themselves better.
Machain Maxwell, asserted that his organisation adopted scientific principles so as to get the actual needs of the people who are mostly farmers, fishermen, civil servants and many others.
Baring his mind, the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) Demsa LGA, Nathaniel Pwadidi, lauded the stewardship of the member, and said she has done a good thing to organise the event which is the first of its kind in the area.
Pwadidi, observed that Demsa people are proud of her because she is one of the vibrant member in the house, explaining that her performance has clearly shown that they have made a right choice in sending her to the house.
In their separate vote of thanks, the District Head of Gwamba, Josiah Umaru, Chairman Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Demsa LGA, Pastor Stephen Babbada, and representative of Muslim Community, Usman Abdulhamid, commended the member, and called on her to continue to put her best in ensuring effective representation.
