ADAMAWA LAWMAKER SEEKS RELIEF MATERIALS FOR OCTOBER FLOOD VICTIMS
Following the devastating effects of flooding caused by an unusual torrential rainfall and the release of water from Lagdo Dam by Cameroon Republic, the Member representing Yola North Constituency in the Adamawa state House of Assembly, Hon. Hamidu Sajoh Lekki, has called for urgent government intervention to alleviate the suffering of the displaced persons.
Hon. Lekki, made the call while sponsoring a motion on a matter of urgent public importance at a resumed plenary session presided by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas, today.
The Lawmaker told his colleagues that he found it necessary to raise the point of order considering the unusual flood disaster that has ravaged several communities in his constituency, while displacing many of his constituents.
He informed the Honourable House that the Cameroon republic has released water from Lagdo Dam, and that some of his constituents who reside along the bank of river Benue have been affected severely.
According to him, the water has wrecked havoc in Limawa, Jambutu, Gwadabawa, 80 Housing Unit, Karewa ( Masakare), explaining that the aforementioned communities have been submerged.
He noted with concern how residents of the affected areas were forced to abandon their households and property worth millions, saying that the disaster has also affected many farmers who have been harvesting their farm produce.
Hon. Lekki prayed the House to impress National Assembly to take up the matter with the Federal Government so as to put an end to what he described as nonchalant attitude of the Cameroonian government, as well as the State and National Emergency Management Agencies to come to the aid of his constituents.
Speaking on the motion, the member representing Demsa constituency, Hon. Kate Raymond Mamuno, said her constituency has also been affected by the disaster, describing the situation of her electorates as pathetic.
Hon. Mamuno, said immediate action needed to be taken by both the state and federal governments so as to prevent the reoccurrence of the flooding most especially the release of water from the dam.
In his contribution on the motion, Hon. Bauna Myandassa( Lamurde constituency) said that the only solution to the perennial flood disaster is the dredging of the river Benue so as to contain the volume of water being released annually by the the Cameroon republic.
Hon. Myandassa, pointed out that his Local Government Area which produces rice more than any other LGA in the state, has been hit by the flooding, and that it may likely caused food shortage in the state.
While baring their minds on the motion, the Majority Leader Hon. Abdullahi Umar Yapak( Verde), Hon. Simon Isa( Song), Hon. Bathiya Wesley( Hong), Hon. Shuaibu Babas (Fufore Gurin), Hon. Adwawa Donglock, Hon. Abubakar Isa( Shelleng) commended the Hon. Lekki, for bringing up the matter, and called for urgent action so as arrest the situation.
After contributions from the lawmakers, the speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt, Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas, who presided over the sitting, directed the House Committees on Environment, Water Resources, Agriculture, Health and Human Resources, Special Duties, IDPs and Parliamentary Affairs to liase with members of the National Assembly on how best to proffer solution.
